Service Dog Trainer – In-the-field

Reports to:  Director of Training

Position: Full Time – three weeks in-the-field doing service dog delivery and/or training at client locations across the United States and in some occasions abroad.

Primary Functions, Responsibilities and Duties:

  • To provide training support to the Director of Training.
  • To train service dogs to assist individuals with invisible disabilities defined as: PTSD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Diabetes and Seizure Disorder
  • To work with dogs training them either on site at the facility in Virginia or through field experiences as you travel.
  • To monitor the service dog and client relationship/team abilities through scheduled visits to the clients’ homes.
  • To deliver service dogs to the clients and then successfully execute training the dog/client team during the first week of delivery.
  • To familiarize dogs-in-training with human interaction, teach basic obedience skills such as walking in pace, following basic commands.
  • To work under the supervision of the Director of Training to learn and then execute Organizational training techniques for particular field of service in which the dog must work.
  • To do some community outreach/awareness/advocacy events as directed by the Organization

Job Activities:

  • Performing General Physical Activities that require considerable use of arms, legs and body movement such as climbing, lifting, walking, stooping, handling of service dog simultaneous with work materials.
  • Judging the Qualities of the Service Dog in Training and its team member by assessing the quality of the performance/tasking of the service dog and assessing the abilities of the client/handler.
  • Getting Information by observing, receiving and obtaining information from relevant sources such as SDWR staff, clients, collaborators and partners.
  • Identifying Objects, Actions and Event by categorizing, estimating and recognizing differences or similarities, detecting and appropriately reacting to changes in circumstances and or events.
  • Developing Objectives and Strategies by establishing short and long-range objectives and specifying the strategies and actions to achieve them particular in training the service dog and the service dog team
  • Establishing and Maintaining Interpersonal Relationships by developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with staff, clients, partners and collaborators, and maintaining good relationships over time.

Skills:

  • Ability to Instruct – teaching others (clients) how to work as a team with their service dog
  • Learning Strategies – selecting and using training methods and procedures appropriately
  • Speaking – talking with others effectively to convey information and thoughts
  • Monitoring – monitoring and assessing performance of yourself, the service dog in training, and the clients to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Judgment and decision making—consider costs and or time in relationship to the benefits of a potential action.

Client Support

  • Assist Director of Training in answering client calls regarding training difficulties
  • During first week of delivery, ensure that home, school and or workplace, transportation, and all other environmental elements and routines are observed and that the service dog team is comfortable transitioning through the environments.
  • Ensure that emergency responders in the client’s town are aware of and meet the service dog team.
  • Fully explain Organization requirements regarding log books and care of service animal are discussed and followed by the client.

Qualifications

This is a physically demanding position that requires trainers to walk and control dogs of various sizes and breeds.  This position requires three weeks of travel per month.  College coursework in animal behavior, biology and psychology while not required is a plus.   An apprenticeship under the direction of experienced instructors or trainers is also a plus.  A minimum two years experience working with or training dogs is required.

Candidate must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
