Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers is a fully incorporated 501 (c) (3) organization whose mission is to provide education and raise awareness about the role of service dogs and the different types of assistance they may provide to persons with invisible health issues such as Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, Seizure Disorders, Hypoglycemic Unawareness, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and Autism. It is important to know that people, whose lives might be improved or even saved by having a service dog, may have a disability that is not visible. Individuals that struggle with invisible disabilities often will benefit from having a canine companion in their lives to enhance quality of life, provide hope, independence and peace of mind. Director of Marketing and Development / Virginia

The Development Director’s primary responsibility is to raise money for a not­for­profit organization. He or she creates and implements a development plan that details how the organization solicits donors and identifies funding sources such as grants, in­kind donations, charitable events and marketing opportunities.  The development director shares his development plans with senior leadership and the board of directors. As the governing body for such an organization, the board of directors provides oversight and leadership. The development director also spends time personally soliciting donors. As such, strong relationship building and solicitation skills are important. He/She will develop and implement strategies to identify, cultivate, andsolicit gifts, and will serve a primary relationship manager for a portfolio of major donors. To this end, the Development Director will perform these specific duties:

Essential Duties:

● Meet personal and organizational fundraising goals.

● Develop and manage a donor portfolio of prospects and participate in direct solicitation of funds, including individuals, corporations, foundations, and other organizations

● Develop and service a portfolio of 50­100 major gift donors and prospects including trustees and capital campaign prospects, including preparing for and managing meetings, communications, moves management, and cultivation activities

● Grow and manage a Corporate Council of 25+ major corporate donors, including preparing for and managing meetings, communications, and special events

● Generate innovative ideas and solutions that engage donors and increase donor retention. Manage successful stewardship of major contributors to ensure maximum retention of major donors and supporters

● Prepare proposals, stewardship reports, correspondence, and special acknowledgments to donors in coordination with the appropriate members of the development team

● Prepare annual budgets for SDWR. The budget details the cash required to fund the programs of SDWR. A successful budget should be realistic, consistent and measurable. The director provides detailed information about how much money must be raised to meet budget criteria. This budget must be approved by the board of directors before it is implemented.

● Create marketing materials, and social media and advertising campaigns as part of a public relations strategy. The nonprofit development director is also responsible for branding. This concept, critical to successful fundraising endeavors, should focus on a strategy that expands the target audience through community relations, speaking engagements, newsletters and charitable events.

● Utilize the Salesforce/DonorDrive database platform as the primary resource for managing donor relationships, building a donor pipeline, and reporting

● Represent SDWR at internal and external events as appropriate. This may include but not be limited to cultivation events, dinners and galas, donor and prospect meetings, professional industry gatherings, and speaking engagements

● Work with fellow staff to ensure a donor­centered and effective approach to our work and workplace culture

● Develop professional relationships with staff throughout the organization

● Understand and endorse the mission and values of SDWR

● Performs other duties as assigned

In addition, when approved by the Board of Directors, the Development Director will launch and steward a capital campaign for the purpose of acquiring a permanent facility. The successful candidate will be a self­starter, able to work well with others, and have 3 – 5 years demonstrable experience in development/professional fundraising, event management, and public speaking or Comparable Education in related field. Experience with donor management software desirable. Some overnight travel required, some evenings and weekends required

Qualifications

Well­ qualified candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree in business, marketing or nonprofit leadership with fundraising experience. Other helpful experience includes, but is not limited to, public relations, prospecting, business development and negotiation. Persuasive writing, strong verbal communication and the ability to interact at the executive level are other key qualifications.
